Galaxy S22, S21, and Other Older Devices to Miss Out on Instant Slow-mo Feature

At the end of March, Samsung rolled out the entire suite of Galaxy AI features for the Galaxy S23 series, Z Fold 5, Z Flip 5, and Tab S9 series, bringing amazing AI features such as Circle to search, Generative AI editing, live translate for calls to older flagship devices.

Instant Slow-mo AI feature uses AI for frame interpolation to instantly turn any normal video into a fun slow-motion video by artificially adding more frames to the original clip.

The introduction of this feature is related to removing the slow-motion recording in 960 fps @ 720p resolution since the new AI feature can turn even 4K 120 fps videos into slow-motion clips. Furthermore, it is expected to receive 10-bit video support and 480p video upscaling soon.

However, it has been reported that the instant slow-mo AI feature was added to all 2023 flagship devices, except for the Galaxy S23 FE (as per the official changelog here), and now the S22 series will follow suit.

It has now been confirmed (via Samsung Community) that the Galaxy S22 series, Z Fold 4, Z Flip 4, and Tab S8 series will receive all the other Galaxy AI features except for the Instant Slow-mo, which puts them in the same situation as the S23 FE.

This is allegedly because the instant slow-mo feature is apparently using on-device AI and requires a powerful GPU and NPU to function properly. So it is said that the Exynos 2200, 8 Gen 1, and 8+ Gen 1 aren’t capable enough to run the slow-motion AI.

In addition, limited AI features (Circle Search and Magic Rewrite only) are coming to the 2021 Samsung flagships, the S21, Fold 3, and Flip 3. These devices will also miss out on the Instant Slow-mo feature.

As for the One UI 6.1 update timeline for the 2022 flagships, Samsung reportedly targets an early May rollout, bringing all the Galaxy AI features except for the Instant slow-mo to these older devices.

Hence, Samsung may use the Instant Slow-mo feature to differentiate between the older and newer flagship phones.
