Galaxy A55’s Exynos 1480 Chip Shows Up in GeekBench Listing

The Galaxy A54 was a very successful mid-range phone because of an overall balance in specs. The cameras perform well, and Samsung puts focus on the materials and design. With a strong 4-year update policy and monthly security patches for a while, the Galaxy A54 sold very well across markets, with the only criticism being directed at the subpar chipset of choice- the Exynos 1380.

Since using Exynos chips brings down costs significantly and helps with Samsung’s profit margins, they’ll continue to use an Exynos chip for the Galaxy A55 as well. The Galaxy A55 will ship with iterative overall upgrades and will feature the new Exynos 1480 SOC.

The Exynos 1480 has a new GPU from AMD so it will perform better than the A54 in games. According to a post from Revegnus on X, on Geekbench 6, it scores 1180 points in the single-core Geekbench test. It hits 3536 in the multi-core test, and these scores are on test software builds. Expect higher actual scores once the product launches. The Galaxy A55 is still in the testing phase for now.

The Geekbench score doesn’t reveal anything about efficiency. However, the A54’s Exynos 1380 was renowned for good battery life, so we expect similar or better efficiency on the Exynos 1480.

In contrast, the A54 scores about 1000 in the single-core test and only 2800 in the multi-core test. It’s a major leap in the multi-core performance. We’re unsure whether the Exynos 1480 will use the same 5nm Samsung Node as the Exynos 1380. There’s a chance that Samsung could upgrade it to a newer and more efficient 4nm (4LPP+) node. However, this node is pricey and is generally on flagship chips.

The A55 will stick to a similar design with the triple camera setup with individual rings on the left, and it’ll ship with Android 14 out of the box. We hope One UI is more optimized at launch than it was in the previous generation. It’ll get a chip bump to the Exynos 1480, and we expect it to launch around March 2024. If Samsung is moving all their schedules a bit early, we might see it as early as February 2024 since the S24 lineup will launch in January 2024.
