Samsung is rumored to bring the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 in July 2024. These new foldables are expected to continue the legacy of great Samsung foldables for the sixth-generation models.
However, it has long been noted that despite 2024 marking the fifth year for Samsung in the foldable space, the new models are nothing groundbreaking. They are only expected to be iterative updates over the current-gen Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5.
This creates a few significant issues: there are fewer reasons for users of older generations to upgrade to the newer models, and it also places Samsung at a serious competitive disadvantage from the hardware point-of-view, for example, alongside the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro and the OnePlus Open, with the two foldables being especially light and thin compared to the Z Fold 5.
Hence, to solve these problems, it is being said that Samsung is working on the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim for early 2025, as reported by a reliable leaker, Ross Young (via @DSCCRoss on X/Twitter).
As the name implies, this new Z Fold 6 Slim will likely be thinner and lighter than the upcoming Z Fold 6, bringing Samsung more on par with its foldable competition.
However, that is not all. Ross states that the thinness will be achieved by removing the digitizer layer for the display, which sadly means there will be no support for the S Pen on this new foldable. This decision is perplexing since some competitors have thinner foldables with stylus support.
There are two positive pieces of information about this new foldable, which include a bigger display than the standard Galaxy Z Fold 6 but with the same starting price as the standard variant. This foldable looks like a major sales pull for people who do not use the S Pen on their units and wish for a bigger display in a less bulky design.Â
Unfortunately, it has been said that the launch is still a while away. The source states that panel production for this new foldable will begin in Q4 2024, with an expected launch timeline of Q1 2025. Thus, it can be speculated that Samsung might debut it alongside the Galaxy S25 series.
It is also to be noted that the “Slim” moniker for this new foldable hasn’t yet been finalized, and the final marketing name could be the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra, as per the source in a reply.
