Samsung May Expand its Foldable Smartphone Portfolio: Tri-fold and a Budget Flip

Samsung has been leading the foldable smartphone market for years now. But recent launches, although good, have been very incremental upgrades.

It has been some time since we last saw something groundbreaking from the tech giant. However, that might just change next year, as per a report that has been making rounds on the internet recently.

Report Suggests Possibility of New Foldable Devices from Samsung

A recent report by ZDNet Korea states that there has been a decline in the demand for Samsung’s foldable smartphones this year. This is indicated by the lower number of shipments of OLED panels for foldables than was initially expected.

The expected sales for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the Galaxy Z Flip 6 were around 9 to 10 million units. But the numbers have now been revised to around 7 to 8 million.

A Tri-fold and a New Flip

However, as the report further mentions, Samsung has plans to increase the shipments of these panels next year. A reason for this is the strong possibility of Samsung expanding its foldable smartphone portfolio in 2025. This means there could be more Samsung foldables besides the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and the Galaxy Z Flip 7 at the next launch event.

In particular, Samsung is considering the release of a tri-fold smartphone that will be able to fold twice. There may also be plans for a ‘popular’ model of the clamshell-type flip phone.

There are contradicting reports as to what ‘popular’ here could mean. Some talk about a cheaper version of the existing Galaxy Z Flip series foldables. On the other hand, some say it will be an enhanced version.

Popular tipster Jukanlosreve, who provided the aforementioned report, has an inclination towards the latter. In short, only time will tell what is actually true, although the tipster does have a good accuracy score.

This piece of information comes just a couple of days after Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition in South Korea, which is essentially the upgraded version of the Galaxy Z Flip 6. Samsung may also launch this foldable in China as the W25, along with the W25 Flip. The point is that Samsung has clearly moved up a gear in the foldable smartphone market.

The report goes on to quote an industry insider claiming that Samsung has completed the development of parts for the tri-fold model and that it is ready for commercialization. It is up to Samsung to decide whether this product sees the light of day or not. One thing is for sure โ€” next year will be quite interesting for the foldable smartphone industry.
