As the launch of Samsung’s next-generation foldables draws ever closer, so does the amount of leaks and rumors about the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6.
While the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is expected to be another disappointingly minor upgrade, with improvements to weight distribution, less visible crease, thinner chassis, and a chipset update, not much is known about the Z Flip 6 even now.
However, the major complaint with Samsung’s foldables has been the visible crease running through the middle of the inner display, which destroys the media consumption experience, especially outdoors. This has been a major issue since the debut of the company’s foldable lineup.
Fortunately, as per new information that has recently surfaced online thanks to the South Korean publication TheElec, it is being said that the company is actively working to reduce the visibility of the display crease for the Galaxy Z Flip 6.
This is made possible through the use of thicker Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) on the Galaxy Z Flip 6’s inner display. It will have a higher thickness of 50 microns on the Z Flip 6, compared to the predecessor Flip 5, which has an inner display UTG of 30 microns thickness.
Increasing the thickness of the UTG layer on the inner display also has positive implications for hinge durability since the teardrop hinge will be further strengthened to support the thicker inner display. However, the hinge is expected to remain mostly the same as the Z Flip 5.
It also states that the UTG layer suppliers for the Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6 will remain the same as their predecessors, with Corning supplying it for the Flip 6 and Schott being responsible for the Fold 6’s UTG layer. Samsung has followed this duality in its supply chain for the UTG layer ever since the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3.
The report also notes a few details for future generations, with next year’s Galaxy Z Flip 7 rumored to have an even thicker inner display than the Z Flip 6, and its hinge will require a complete redesign for 2025.
We can expect the Galaxy Z Flip 6 to be announced alongside the Z Fold 6, Galaxy Watch 7 series, Galaxy Buds 3 Pro, and the Galaxy Ring in Samsung’s upcoming Unpacked event, rumored to happen in July 2024.
