The Galaxy S24 series had a problem with grainy and low-quality colours at lower brightness. If you use your phone in the dark, the brightness generally drops to its lowest possible value. The least possible minimum brightness has a different calibration to other brightness levels to ensure color consistency.
For the S24 series, darker colours just before the OLED spectrum would turn off before fading into black- like darker and lighter grays- were very poor. It would show a banding effect thanks to using outdated 8-bit technology, and the display itself would appear extremely grainy and low-res.
It had a weird texture and this grainy display did affect some people’s use cases. While the screens were still passable for the year and carried the typical vibrant Samsung tuning, this is an issue that shouldn’t be there on a flagship device.
No Grainy Displayโat least on the Galaxy S25 Ultra
Samsung has responded appropriately. The new panels, while using similar technology to last year, no longer have a grainy effect or grainy texture at low brightness levels.
We aren’t sure whether this was simple software color tuning adjustments or hardware changes, but the S25 Ultra does not have a grainy display problem anymore. It was most prominent with the Ultra model last year. This year, we don’t have it and Samsung has addressed it.
