The S25 Edge was officially teased at the January Galaxy Unpacked event. The phone is a new direction for the S series since it doesn’t have the usual triple camera array of the base S models. There’s a new, different design for the rear, and the focus is on making the phone slim- reports say around 6 to 6.4mm in thickness.
This does not invite many practical use cases as the base S25 model is already very slim, at 7.2mm. Since last year, there have also been leaks and rumors of an ultra-thin variant of the iPhoneโapparently the iPhone 17 Air, which will follow a similar path to the Galaxy S25 Edge.
What to expect from the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge and iPhone 17 Air
As per leaks, the iPhone 17 Air features a 120Hz OLED display. We are not sure whether it’s a single camera or a dual camera setup on the rear. Some leaks point to a single 48MP primary camera and no ultrawide camera. This is quite an odd setup for a phone that will mostly cost 1000$. Leaks currently agree on a 6.6″ screen size. It’ll sport the new Dynamic Island design.
It’s worth noting that all this is currently speculation. Apple might scrap the plans for the iPhone 17 Air depending on the reception of the S25 Edge. The rumors may be proven false, too, so do not take any of this information at face value.
Rumors also point to Apple using their own in-house Bluetooth and WiFi chips on this device. For the SOC, Apple could give it the A19 chip and not the A19 Pro, which the Pro models will get. As far as the thickness measure goes, leaks say 5 to 6mm. If it’s 6mm, that’s putting it around Samsung’s measure too. We are expecting an obvious compromise in battery life and capacity. Since the phone involves complex engineering, we’re expecting at least a 999$ price tag. The durability remains a question mark, too.
Samsung, on the other will release the S25 Edge in either April or at the next Galaxy Unpacked event. We’re expecting a 120Hz AMOLED screen, dual cameras (200MP main and 12MP ultrawide), a slim form factor, a 6.6″ size, and the 8 Elite chip. It makes no sense to price this more than the S25 Plus since it has worse specifications than it, and probably no zoom, too. We are expecting battery capacity compromises as wellโrumor say it will pack a 3900 mAh battery.
We’re not sure why Apple and Samsung are randomly making slim phones. While analysts cite sales; it is questionable. Both Mini and Plus phones barely sold any units; a Slim phone that is grossly overpriced with a single camera is not doing the iPhone any favors. The S25 Edge has potential if priced right.
